Salary packaging is an Australian Taxation Office (ATO) approved method of paying your employee’s remuneration package in a combination of cash salary and non-cash benefits, such as cars, living expenses, professional membership fees and extra superannuation. By paying for these items with a pre-tax deduction, employees will only be taxed on the remaining income. All employees, that have approval, are able to salary package and potentially save thousands of dollars each year.

Meet Brad
Brad is an HR manager for a charity and earns $130,000. Due to the tax concessions for the charity, he can package a gross up of $30,000 and elects to use that for his mortgage, paying $15,900 per year in pre-tax salary. In addition, he has a private motor vehicle that he wishes to package under a novated lease.
Brad pays for the full running costs and lease payments in pre-tax salary and makes a post-tax contribution to the running costs, which offsets any Fringe Benefits Tax. The total cost of running his car is $15,400 per year. Brad has used the savings to pay off an additional $12,000 on his mortgage.
